Pixel Commando Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last few days playing Pixel Commando and I've got to say, it's been a bit of a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I love the retro aesthetic and the fact that the game doesn't take itself too seriously. The pixel art style is really well done and the game's sense of humor is great - I found myself laughing out loud a few times at the absurdity of it all. But on the other hand, the gameplay can get a bit repetitive and the controls can be a bit wonky at times.
One of the things that drew me to Pixel Commando was the promise of fast-paced action and intense shootouts, and for the most part, the game delivers on that front. The levels are well-designed and the enemy AI is pretty smart, so you'll need to stay on your toes if you want to make it through alive. But as I played through the game, I started to notice that the levels were all starting to blend together - same old corridors, same old enemies, same old boss fights. It's not that the game is bad or anything, it's just that it doesn't really do anything new or exciting, and after a while, it starts to feel like you're just going through the motions.
Despite the repetitive gameplay, I did find myself getting pretty invested in the story. The main character is a bit of a wisecracker and his one-liners had me cracking up, but at the same time, he's got a bit of a soft spot for his teammates and the people he's trying to save. The story's not super original or anything, but it's told in a way that's engaging and easy to follow, and I found myself actually caring about what happened to the characters. The voice acting is also top-notch, with some really talented voice actors bringing the characters to life.
But even with the engaging story and solid voice acting, I couldn't shake the feeling that Pixel Commando is just a bit too shallow. The game's not particularly long, and once you've finished the campaign, there's not a whole lot to do besides play through it again on a higher difficulty level. There's no multiplayer mode, no additional game modes, nothing. It's just a pretty straightforward, linear experience, and that's a bit of a bummer. I mean, I know some people might be okay with that, but for me, I like a game that's got a bit more meat to it, you know?
I think what really saves Pixel Commando from being a total disappointment is its price point. The game is pretty cheap, so even if you only get a few hours of entertainment out of it, it's not like you're breaking the bank or anything. And like I said, the game's not bad - it's just not particularly memorable or impactful. If you're a fan of retro-style shooters and you're looking for something to play for a few hours, then Pixel Commando might be worth checking out. But if you're looking for something with a bit more depth or replay value, then you might want to look elsewhere.
Overall, I'd say Pixel Commando is a solid, if unremarkable, game. It's got some great moments and some funny writing, but it's ultimately let down by its repetitive gameplay and lack of depth. If the developers had added a bit more variety to the levels and maybe some additional game modes, then I think Pixel Commando could have been something really special. As it stands, it's just a fun little diversion - nothing more, nothing less.
