Eventide Review & Gameplay Guide
I just finished playing through Eventide, and I've got to say, it was a real mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I loved the atmosphere and the setting - the game takes place in this creepy, abandoned Slavic village, and the devs did an amazing job of bringing the place to life. The graphics are really something special, with all these tiny details that make you feel like you're actually there, exploring the ruins and uncovering the secrets of the village. But on the other hand, the gameplay was kind of a letdown for me.
I mean, I was expecting a lot more in terms of puzzle-solving and exploration, but what I got was a lot of walking around and collecting stuff. Don't get me wrong, the puzzles that are there are really well-done - they're challenging, but not so hard that you get frustrated. But there just aren't that many of them, and the rest of the time you're just kind of wandering around, picking up items and talking to NPCs. It's not bad, exactly, but it's just not what I was hoping for. And the story, which I was really looking forward to, was also kind of a disappointment. It's all very mysterious and intriguing at first, but as you get further in, it starts to feel a bit disconnected and hard to follow.
One thing that really stood out to me, though, was the sound design. The music and sound effects are absolutely top-notch, and they do a great job of creating this creepy, unsettling atmosphere that really draws you in. There were plenty of times when I was playing and I'd hear some weird noise or see something out of the corner of my eye, and it would totally freak me out. So even though the gameplay wasn't always the most exciting, the atmosphere and sound design definitely made up for it.
I also want to talk about the characters for a bit, because they're definitely one of the highlights of the game. The protagonist is this gruff, no-nonsense kind of guy, but as you get to know him, you realize that he's got a lot of depth and complexity. And the supporting characters are all really well-done too - they're all unique and interesting, and they add a lot to the story. My favorite was this old crone who lives on the outskirts of the village - she's just so quirky and fun, and she had some of the best dialogue in the whole game.
Overall, I'd say that Eventide is definitely worth playing, but it's not without its flaws. If you're a fan of atmospheric, slow-burning games with a lot of exploration and puzzle-solving, you'll probably love it. But if you're looking for something with a lot of action or a really complex storyline, you might want to look elsewhere. For me, the good outweighed the bad, and I'm glad I played it - but I can see how it might not be everyone's cup of tea.
As I was playing through Eventide, I couldn't help but think about other games that I've played that have similar atmospheres and settings. Games like STALKER and Metro came to mind, and I think that fans of those series will probably really enjoy Eventide. It's not as long or as complex as some of those games, but it's got a similar feel and a lot of the same elements. So if you're a fan of that type of game, or if you're just looking for something a little different, I'd definitely recommend giving Eventide a try.
